Samsung Smartphone On All Carriers

Videos Samsung galaxy from Youtube

Samsung, the industry's second-largest mobile device manufacturer, lags in the smartphone market where it is the fifth-largest player (behind Nokia, RIM, Apple and HTC).

Samsung plans to raise its smartphone sales target for this year to more than 20 million units, up 2 million from an earlier target.

Samsung's new flagship Galaxy S is their platform for this clallenge. It will soon be available on all the top mobile operators in the United States, including AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-mobile.

- Sprint yesterday announced plans to offer the device over its WIMAX network (branding it 'Epic'). Sprint will include a 16GB microSD card with the Epic 4G. Sprint says it will be available later this summer.

- T-Mobile will be the first US operator to launch Galaxy S on July 21, branding it the Vibrant and selling it for US $200 with a two-year contract.

- AT&T will sell it as 'Captivate' but has not revealed launch dates

- Verizon will sell its version as the Fascinate and expects to offer the device by late summer or early autumn.

All Galaxy S variants include Samsung's 1GHz A8 Cortex Hummingbird processor, Android 2.1 operating system with TouchWiz 3.0, 5 megapixel camera with 720p HD video capture, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, and Swype Software for the on-screen of QWERTY keyboard.

All five will be among the first to ship with Bluetooth 3.0 which offers high-speed data transfers between devices. Bluetooth 3.0 uses the Bluetooth link for negotiation and link establishment, but high data rate traffic is carried over a colocated 802.11 link.

The South Korean vendor claims over 100 operators worldwide have already decided to offer the smartphone. Canada's Bell Mobility will reportedly offer the device this summer branded as Vibrant.

James kendrick has a Cheat Sheet for the Top 6 Android Phones.
The iPhone 4, Droid Incredible, Evo 4G, and Nexus One are compared in this chart by Bill Shrink. It compares the costs over a two year contract.

AT&T's new $15/month plan maxes out at 200MB. Their new "unlimited" $25 plan is now capped at 2GB - with $10 per 1GB in overage fees. That makes using video chat impossibly expensive if you want to capture an extended event. A "4G" network like Sprint's WiMAX service - with truly unlimited service - may be a virtual necessity for heavy video use.

New Samsung Netbook Line-up to Launch in January 2010

The Netbook World Summit was being held today in Paris and some interesting tidbits of information have been gleaned form Samsung Notebook Product Manager, Jaewoo Seo. He says that a completely new range of Samsung netbooks will be revealed in January 2010 based on the Intel Pine Trail platform.

This is hardly surprising news as we already know that most of the big manufacturers are planning on showcasing their Pineview-powered netbooks at CES 2010 in early January.

However, we did learn that these models are expected to incorporate a much thinner design whilst having even longer battery lives. Samsung already delivers some of the longest netbook battery lives so this is great news. Also, at least one netbook with a toucscreen display is expected.

These new netbooks will also feature an instant-on OS solution, allowing quick access to the web and select software. Samsung plan to focus their netbook range on a few select models going forward, rather than the 8-9 models on the market currently. This can only be good news as it means resources will be pumped into some, hopefully, killer netbooks.

Samsung: OLED Notebooks by Late 2010

Samsung says we could get the first commercial OLED laptops a year from now.

Speaking at the official IFA launch of the X-Series and N-Series notebooks and notebooks and netbooks, Kyu Uhm, Head of Worldwide Sales and Marketing for Samsung's Computing Division, said that the company would look to release towards the end of 2010.

"Samsung is the largest OLED screen manufacturer. And as soon as it's available commercially for laptops we will adopt it," he said. After a hushed word from a colleague he added the reveal: "Probably sometime Q3 next year."

That means a year from now we'll have OLED notebooks. Possibly. Patrick Povel, European Senior Product Manager, was quick to add that analyst Gartner believes mainstream OLED notebooks will become the norm over the next half-decade.

And Samsung is clearly set on the idea, having previously shown off an OLED prototype notebook.

Pavel had previously spoken about the PC becoming more personal than ever before, and that the days of one PC per household are gone.
"We're moving towards one PC per person, the computer is becomin personal... The growth is coming from the low end," he added as he talked up the N-Series netbooks.

He explained that the X-Series - powered by low voltage Intel chips - are the best compromise power and mobility, and that customers had sometimes been dissapointed by the lack of netbook power.

"60 per cent of people don't know the difference between a notebook and a netbook," he explained, referring to a recent survey. "Why do they buy a new notebook? Because they're not satisfied with the performance."

"The netbook car drives at 100km/h, some of our competitors drive at 150km/h. The target for [us is] 200km/h.

"With the X-Series gone are the days when you had to choose between style and performance," added Povel. "The on-the-go user needs some better performance and larger screens."
