Nexus One to get Android 2.2 over the air update this week

Videos Nexus One from Youtube

The wait will soon be over. Google has announced that official over the air updates to Android 2.2/Froyo will be rolled out to the Nexus One this week. Nexus One owners should receive a message on the phone's notification bar at the of the screen.

Hopefully by Friday those of you with the Google phone (who haven't already rooted and installed Froyo unofificially) will be able to enjoy being able to save apps to the SD card and updating all apps simultaneously among other things.

There's no word on whether or not you need to back up your data although it'd perhaps be a good idea to do that before installing any updates. You'll probably also want to download the update over Wi-Fi to avoid any extra data charges.

With the Nexus One getting its update on, we'd hope that HTC isn't too far behind-although with HTC Sense to contend with, a slight delay is to be expected. A spokesman for HTC told us, "We are working hard with our partners to update the HTC Sense experience on Froyo and distribute it to our customers as fast as possible. We expect to release updates for several of our 2010 model including Desire, Legend and Wildfire beginning in Q3."

Google's Nexus One Specs Leaked

Click Video Google Nexus One Video Review Part One from Youtube

Even if Google employees have kept mum about Nexus One specifics, ROM hackers have been able to dig deep into the phone's system files to reveal the list of hardware we can expect from the Nexus One.

The clever folks at These Are The Droids have analyzed the Android 2.1 ROM for the Nexus One and discovered specs for the Nexus One, including a proximity and ambient light sensor, an accelerometer, a magnetic compass, WiFi, a stereo FM speaker, a noise-cancellation chipset, OpenGL ES 2.0-capable graphics, and references to an auto-focus camera with LED flash. These are Droids also notes that the ROM 2.1 hints at a Snapdragon processor inside.

The Snapdragon is capable of clock speeds that top 1GHz--nearly double the processor speed of Motorola's DROID. The OpenGL ES 2.0 support should also satisfy gamers, and put the Nexus One on par with the iPhone in terms of graphical power.

Another interesting feature is the purported FM tuner which was also to be included in the Motorola Sholes Tablet specs that leaked out earlier this month (here's hoping we get some iPod Nano-style live radio control!). These Are Droids also reports that the Nexus One will have an 802.11n chipset (most smart phones currently support 802.11g); WiFi N may be overkill for this little machine, but at least it will be able to fit nicely into a dedicated Wireless-N environment.

Cellular South Will Launch An Android Phone This Year

Cellular South said it will launch a smartphone before the end of the year running on Google's Android Platfrom. The carrier is one of a few U.S. cerriers to openly declare its intentions to jump on the Android bandwagon, and is certainly the smallest U.S. operator to date to do so.

The regional carrier did not provide any information on the device's introduction date, pricing, manufacturer of features, and said more information would be coming soon.

However, the annoncement does give Cellular Soth a point of differentiation among smaller carriers, and indeed, among U.S. cerriers in general. Currently, T-Mobile USA leads U.S. cerriers on the Android front, and will launch its second Android Phone, the myTouch3G, in August.

Where other carriers stand regarding Android is less clear. Verizon Wireless reportedly will launch a Motorola-made Android phone by the end of the year.

AT&T Mobility has been rumored to be considering Android phone launches this year, and Samsung is supposedly building an Android phone for Sprint Nextel. Currently, Sprint and T-Mobile are the only two U.S. Carriers in the Google-led Open Handset Alliance.

Google Netbook and Phone coming out soon rumors say

Google is getting everywhere these days and the latest word on the street is that google is currently in talks with Quanta to develop its own Netbook which will run with Google's Chrome operating system and which could be released in the early part of 2010 or at least before next summer.

Not only that, Google is apparently also working with a manufacturer to produce a Google branded phone, which we could see launched before the is out. The phone will supposedly carry a Qualcomm chip.

Yes it's a rumour but there's rather a lot of detail for a rumour. Anyway, if it's on schedule for before the end of the year, maybe in time for the December shopping rush, we won't have to wait too long to find out if it's all true.

According to Notheast Securities analyst Ashok Kumar, Google won't be doing what others do and selling their phones via carries, instead the low cost phones, which of course will come unlocked to take any sim card, will be sold in retail stores.

Now I can imagine that is going to go down extremely well with consumers who often have to tie themselves into lengthy contracts with mobile phone carriers or go the hassle of unlocking a phone so that it can be used on another network.

Makes you wonder what network operators and other mobile phone manufactures will make of it all as many have been actively supporting Google's Android which has been gaining a lot of momentum recently.

I suspect that if an unlocked low cost Google phone does turn up in a matter of weeks they are not going to be too happy about it.

In a way Google will be making themselves a competitor against many of those who have served as partners in the past. How that will pan out in the future I really don't know but the way that Google handles it will be crucial to future relationships.

The information about the Google phone and Google Netbook has come from a pretty reliable source and we've no reason to doubt it but until Google actually says something, we can't forget that it is all still speculation.

Those who have tried to extract information out of Google have been told that it's just market rumour and that they don't comment on such matters. Sounds promising though!

And no it's not it on the picture, nobody knows what will it look like. But it would be cool if it was like Freescale concept shown at CES.
