Samsung Smartphone On All Carriers

Videos Samsung galaxy from Youtube

Samsung, the industry's second-largest mobile device manufacturer, lags in the smartphone market where it is the fifth-largest player (behind Nokia, RIM, Apple and HTC).

Samsung plans to raise its smartphone sales target for this year to more than 20 million units, up 2 million from an earlier target.

Samsung's new flagship Galaxy S is their platform for this clallenge. It will soon be available on all the top mobile operators in the United States, including AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-mobile.

- Sprint yesterday announced plans to offer the device over its WIMAX network (branding it 'Epic'). Sprint will include a 16GB microSD card with the Epic 4G. Sprint says it will be available later this summer.

- T-Mobile will be the first US operator to launch Galaxy S on July 21, branding it the Vibrant and selling it for US $200 with a two-year contract.

- AT&T will sell it as 'Captivate' but has not revealed launch dates

- Verizon will sell its version as the Fascinate and expects to offer the device by late summer or early autumn.

All Galaxy S variants include Samsung's 1GHz A8 Cortex Hummingbird processor, Android 2.1 operating system with TouchWiz 3.0, 5 megapixel camera with 720p HD video capture, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, and Swype Software for the on-screen of QWERTY keyboard.

All five will be among the first to ship with Bluetooth 3.0 which offers high-speed data transfers between devices. Bluetooth 3.0 uses the Bluetooth link for negotiation and link establishment, but high data rate traffic is carried over a colocated 802.11 link.

The South Korean vendor claims over 100 operators worldwide have already decided to offer the smartphone. Canada's Bell Mobility will reportedly offer the device this summer branded as Vibrant.

James kendrick has a Cheat Sheet for the Top 6 Android Phones.
The iPhone 4, Droid Incredible, Evo 4G, and Nexus One are compared in this chart by Bill Shrink. It compares the costs over a two year contract.

AT&T's new $15/month plan maxes out at 200MB. Their new "unlimited" $25 plan is now capped at 2GB - with $10 per 1GB in overage fees. That makes using video chat impossibly expensive if you want to capture an extended event. A "4G" network like Sprint's WiMAX service - with truly unlimited service - may be a virtual necessity for heavy video use.

Nokia's Smartphone Reinvention Begins With N8 Phone

Video Nokia N8 from Youtube

Nokia today unveiled the N8, the first handset from the Finnish company to use both the Symbian 3 operating system and the Qt cross-platform application framework. Although the physical hardware of the N8 is attractive, the Symbian 3 software is more important to Nokia's future. The company's falling status as a market leader is largely due to its reliance on an old interface not fully optimized for touch, so Symbian 3 represents Nokia's best chance to prove that it can still reign atop the smartphone world.

The N8 toucscreen supports multitouch navigation and gestures, the ability to run multiple programs simultaneously and social network status updates directly from the home screen. With a 12 megapixel camera and Carl Zeiss optics, consumers can use the N8 to create and edit HD-quality video recordings, which can be shared or viewed on a television by connecting the N8 with a cable. Nokia plans to launch the N8 in the third quarter for 370 euros ($492) in select markets.

The N8 marks Nokia's largest undertaking to recapture lost smartphones market share - which has dropped to 39 percent from over 50 percent just two years ago. Some of that loss has come at the hands of newer mobile operating systems, such as those from Apple (a aapl) and Google. As competitors created new platforms and user interfaces, Nokia relied heavily on its aging Symbian S60 system.
The lone smartphone exception is Nokia's N900, which runs on the Maemo platform - a derivative of Linux.

While the hardware looks stellar on paper - the first images captured with the N8' s camera rival those of a high-quality dedicated digital camera, for example - Nokia is pinning its hope on the software that will power the N8 as well as future Nokia phones.

Using the new Symbian 3 platform, Nokia hopes to reverse its market share losses and prove to consumers that it can still reign atop the smartphone world. And by leveraging the Pt evironment that it owns, Nokia is also attempting to woo developers to write software for new Symbian 3 devices.

Motorola Droid 2 To Have a 1 GHz Processor, Updated Look

Video Motorola Droid from Youtube

Those who are currently considering the Motorola Droid should be aware that an updated version with a faster processor and a re-designed keyboard is supposedly on the docket for release later this summer.

Verizon Wireless had a pre-release unit of the Droid 2 at an event at Jet Propulsion Laboratory this week, revealing many of the details of this upcoming smartphone.

In many ways, the successor to the best-selling Android OS-based model isn't changing--like the original, it will be a slider with a 3.7 landscape-oriented keyboard. The locations of almost all the buttons and ports remains the same.

However, the Droid 2 will replace the D-pad on the sliding keyboard with a set of directional keys, giving room to make all the keys larger (see a comparison). They are also being made convex, rather than flat like the keys on their predecessor. This modification has likely been made in response to wide-spread criticism of the current Droid's keyboard.

The shape of the entire device is being changed a bit, with with hard corners being smoothed. In addition, the screen is being more centered over the keyboard, getting rid of most of the "chin" on the original Droid's right side.

Another big change will be internal: the Droid 2's processor is reportedly being upgraded to a 1 GHz chip, bringing it into parity with virtually all its competitors.

This smartphone is still several months from release, and Motorola and Verizon are apparently still working out whether it will launch with Google's Android OS 2.1 or version 2.2 The decision about whether to include Motorola's MotoBlur alternate user interface also hasn't been made yet.

The Droid is expected to have a 5 megapixel camera like the original, but this has been upgraded to perform more quickly.

The original Droid comes with a 16 GB microSD memory card, while its successor will reportedly have 8 GB of internal storage and an 8 GB memory card.

Nokia to halve smartphone offerings in 2010

Click Video CES 2010 Nokia N900 from Youtube

Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone maker, has announced it will be cutting its smartphone offering in half next year, despite losing market share to rivals RIM and Apple.

"We see... really fierce competition certainly in the high end, but we also see it in the mid to low end of smartphones increasing," said Jo Harlow, chief of Nokia's smartphone unit, via Reuters. "We will defend our position, but we believe we also have tools to play offense as well as defense."

Part of that "defense" will be to push smartphone prices lower while at the same time increasing margins. Recent figures showed that Nokia had lost smartphone market share for the most recent quarter, from 41 percent to 35 percent.

"Reducing the number of smartphone models makes a lot of sense... but Nokia has to be very careful in finding the right balance: its large product portfolio has been one of its strong competitive advantages in the past," concludes Bernstein analyst Pierre Ferragu.

Could BlackBerry be getting more satellite radio?

Why is there no Sirius XM application for BlackBerry? They have it on other platfroms, and since BlackBerry represents the largest smartphone market in the US, it would make sense for them to cater to that crowd.

It's been over year and a half since QuickPlay began offering a limited XM, featuring only 20 channels for $7.99 per month. So what gives?
I'm not sure what's going on, but there is reason to be optimistic. Brandon Matthews of Satwaves found a press release that suggests that Sirius XM could come along with the BlackBerry 9700.

The press release is for the 9700's release on Bell in Canada. Per the release, "the BlackBerry Bold 9700 smartphone will also deliver great Bell Mobility mobile data services including GPS location, Live TV,SIRIUS Satellite Radio, and Unlimited NHL.
"

The fear, of course, is that this is limited just to Bell and won't be offered on the 9700 on AT&T and T-Mobile. It could be something like Verizon's V-Cast, which offers multimedia options that you can't get on other carries.

That, of course, would be a major bummer. I think that a Sirius XM application for BlackBerry would go over well with the user base, and could certainly attrack even more customers.

New subscribers wouldn't even need a radio unit for their car if they have an auxiliary jack-thd BlackBerry could act as the receiver. Plus, it would mean Howard Stern all the time.

The lack of a Siriux XM application is one of the more disappointing aspects of BlackBerry streaming audio. Other streaming audio applications, like Pandora for BlackBerry and Slacker Radio,
offer excellent alternatives, but there are still things you can't get on those that you can on Sirius XM. We can only hope that this service comes to all devices soon, and not just for 9700 customers on Bell.
